"Don't Buy That, Make This."
A brand-new recipe collection, the latest addition to my How to Save Money on Groceries series, here featuring recipes for food we could buy in stores or restaurants but instead choose to make from scratch at home.
Made to Taste from Whole-Food Ingredients. Budget Friendly. Meal Prep Friendly. Many Weeknight Easy Recipes. Often Great for Gifts. Many Easy DIY.
Why DIY? Why Make Basic Foods from Scratch?
- Some times taste.
- Some times cost.
- Some times better or whole-food ingredients.
- Some times fewer ingredients and especially less sodium.
- Some times to avoid a special grocery run just for one ingredient.
- Some times for a small batch to avoid food waste.
- Some times for sheer convenience.
- Some times to learn traditional cooking techniques.
- Some times to express culinary creativity.
- Some times because some foods aren't available where you live or maybe anywhere.
- Some times just for the fun of it, just because we can.
- All of the above ...

Make This Instead: DIY Substitutes for Foods We Can Buy
It's kind of stunning, all the foods we might make at home ... but just don't.
- Instead of buying a can of peaches, make Simple Sliced Peaches, just four ingredients, turns tables to silent.
- Instead of buying big-box cooked ribs, make Baked Baby Back Ribs with Spicy Berry Sauce, good and tender, done in an hour.
- Instead of buying cooked bacon or bacon bits, make Baked Bacon, perfectly crisp bacon baked the oven.
- Instead of buying tubs of pricey too-much-mayo macaroni salad at the deli, check your pantry for pasta and mayo to make Best-Ever Macaroni Salad, the summer classic, just better.
- Instead of losing your mind to pick one jar from dozens of choices, stock up on cans of fire-roasted tomatoes to make Best Quick Tomato Salsa (Red Salsa) for chips, tacos, burritos, eggs & more.
- Instead of canned baked beans, make Calico Beans aka "Alanna's Famous Cowboy Beans" A hearty bean dish, meaty enough for supper, but more often served as a side at potlucks.
- Instead of buying chicken salad, make Chicken Salad for Sandwiches, make it in minutes with rotisserie chicken and pantry ingredients.
- Instead of pricey, coffee-shop and bottled cold-brewed coffee, make Cold-Brewed Coffee for low-acid coffee that makes perfect iced coffee for hot summers.
- Instead of heading out for holiday cocktails, mix a batch of Cranberry Champagne Cocktails, festive and flexible, just three ingredients.
- Instead of buying packets of oatmeal, meal prep Creamy Oatmeal using three tricks for the very best oatmeal, all easy!
- Instead of lugging in canned beans, learn How to Cook Dried Beans from Scratch, either in a slow cooker or in the oven.

- Instead of gloppy, salty canned tomato soup, make Winter Tomato Soup where slow-cooking draws out summer flavor.
Make Just One Thing. JUST ONE.
Overwhelmed by that long list? I hear you. But please don't let that stop you.
This is doable! You can definitely do this!
In Alanna's Kitchen Wisdom (hmmm .... my initials!), make just one thing from scratch. Just one. No more.
If you like it, make it again. If you like it again, record it somehow, somewhere, however you can get back to it quickly and easily, where you can record your own notes and adaptations.
Then pick another thing to try. Just one.
I've been building my personal list of go-to staple recipes since, well, I was about 10, but got serious about it only in 2016.
START WITH A FOOD YOU LOVE One way to start is to target a type of food you buy out a lot but can be easily made at home, maybe ...
- muffins, say, maybe specifically pumpkin muffins or
- soup, say, maybe an easy carrot soup
OR START WITH A MEAL-TIME STAPLE That's something you can make often, every week, say, and get good at it, make it your own. So let me suggest starting with one of three staple recipes.
- My Everyday Creamy Herb Salad Dressing This is our house salad dressing, one that's super variable and relies on pantry ingredients. It takes five minutes to make and keeps for a week or more. A good salad? Just cut up some greens and vegetables, toss with a little of this dressing. Gorgeous!
- Fast Roast Chicken This is a signature recipe, just three ingredients and one hour in the oven. It won't replace the convenience of a rotisserie chicken but oh, it's the start of a feast.
- How to Make Homemade Vegetable Soup This is another master recipe, that means it's more about technique (here, special techniques to extract flavor) so you can use the vegetables you like most or have on hand.
But again, the idea is to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Pick just one thing. Make just one thing. That's it! And if it feels good, then build from there ...
Pretty soon, you'll be thinking, "Wow! I made this myself!"
Save the Recipes to Make Again and Again
I know the world has gone all digital, including this very site, but ...
... for recipes made over and over, I rely on old-fashioned paper 3x5 recipe cards (affiliate link) organized in a recipe box that lives in a cupboard near the stove, easy to pull out for quick reference.
Amazon reports that I've purchased the very same 3x5 cards 19 times over the years. I like their weight (not too thick, important as you collect more, but not too flimsy either) and their efficient use of space (more open space is better than less).
A set of 3x5 Preprinted Recipe Box Dividers (affiliate link) is helpful. I use some of the preprinted titles but for my own titles, just turn them over.
Watch the size, think through what works for you, especially if just starting your own collection. I like 3x5 recipe cards but 4x6 recipe cards (affiliate link) are also popular.

Thank you for taking a moment to write! I read each and every comment, for each and every recipe. If you have a specific question, it's nearly always answered quick-quick. But I also love hearing your reactions, your curiosity, even your concerns! When you've made a recipe, I especially love to know how it turned out, what variations you made, what you'll do differently the next time. ~ Alanna
